Most people driving between Struisbaai and Arniston pass straight by the turning for De Mond Nature Reserve. That is a pity, because this 918-hectare reserve at the mouth of the Heuningnes River has been a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance since 1986, it holds one of the country's few breeding sites for the endangered Damara tern, and since 2024 it has had something unusual attached to it: South Africa's first "slow" overnight hiking trail. For a reserve this quiet, that is a lot going on, and it sits close enough to Struisbaai to fill a morning, or close enough to Arniston to anchor a two-day walk.

What Makes De Mond Different From De Hoop
De Hoop gets most of the attention in this part of the Overberg, and fairly so, but De Mond is smaller, quieter and much closer to Struisbaai. Its main walk is short and flat enough for most fitness levels to manage in a couple of hours, right where the Heuningnes River meets the sea. The dunes here shift and block the river's outflow, creating salt marshes and dune milkwood forest that support seahorses, crustaceans and reptiles alongside the birdlife. If you want nature without the crowds, that is precisely its appeal.
How far is De Mond Nature Reserve from Struisbaai?
De Mond Nature Reserve is about 33 km from Land's Edge in Struisbaai, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive. That makes it an easy half-day outing, with time left over for lunch back in Struisbaai or a stop in Arniston on the same day.
The Sterna Trail: De Mond's Day Walk
The reserve's main day trail is the Sterna Trail, a 7 km circular route of around two hours that crosses a swaying suspension bridge over the Heuningnes River, passes through dune thicket and along the beach, and returns along the estuary. Its name nods to the terns the reserve protects: Damara terns were long classified in the genus Sterna. Birders should bring binoculars, because the species list includes the African black oystercatcher, Caspian tern and blue crane alongside the Damara tern itself.
Why does the Damara tern matter at De Mond?
The Damara tern is listed as Endangered in South Africa, with a national breeding population of only about 52 pairs in the most recent BirdLife South Africa assessment. De Mond is one of a small number of sites where the birds still breed, mainly from November to March, so a spring or early-summer visit is good timing to look for them. Keep to the paths and give nesting birds plenty of space.
The Damara Trail: A Slow Two-Day Walk to Arniston
The reserve's newer drawcard is the Damara Trail, which CapeNature launched in September 2024 as South Africa's first deliberately "slow" overnight hiking trail. It covers about 16.5 km from De Mond to Arniston over two days: a shorter first day of around 5 km, an overnight at a camping deck in the dunes about 300 m from the sea where you pitch your own tent, and a longer second day of around 11 km that finishes on the beach at Arniston. You park at the De Mond Welcome Centre before you set off, and a shuttle brings you back from Arniston to your car. Interpretive signage along the way covers local plants, shipwrecks, middens and the Waenhuiskrans Cave.
It is a different kind of hike to the Rasperpunt Trail on the Agulhas side, deliberately paced rather than strenuous, and it turns a single reserve visit into a two-day escape.
Do you need to book the Damara Trail in advance?
Yes. The Damara Trail must be booked in advance through CapeNature, because the overnight camping deck has limited space. Call CapeNature reservations on 087 087 8250, or the De Mond office on 087 087 3931 during office hours, and confirm current trail and permit costs when you book.
Practical Details Before You Go
The reserve gate is open from 07:30 to 16:00 on weekdays and until 17:00 on weekends and public holidays, and day visitors need to be out by those times. A day permit is payable at the reserve office. CapeNature's published fee tables list slightly different figures in different places, so confirm the exact amount when you call rather than relying on any single published source, this one included.
Anglers need a separate recreational fishing permit, available from any South African Post Office, and fishing after 17:00 is not allowed. Pets, open fires, flower picking, canoeing and horse riding are not permitted, and cars must stay in the parking area. Bring sun protection, comfortable walking shoes and enough water for the Sterna Trail; the Damara Trail needs camping gear and more planning given the overnight leg.
Where to Stay Near De Mond Nature Reserve
Land's Edge is a set of solar-powered, self-catering cottages and apartments in Struisbaai, within walking distance of the harbour, beach and shops, which makes it a straightforward base for a De Mond morning. If you are tackling the full Damara Trail, Struisbaai works well either side of it: stay the night before and drive to De Mond to start walking, then come back to Struisbaai once the shuttle has returned you to your car.
It is worth pairing De Mond with the area's other day trips. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse precinct is about ten minutes from Struisbaai, Arniston and the Waenhuiskrans Cave deserve their own slow afternoon, and the Elim wine route makes a good third stop. Our Go Local guide has distances and opening times for all of them.
For a visit built around De Mond and its neighbours, give yourself at least two full days: one for Cape Agulhas and the Struisbaai coastline, a second for De Mond, Arniston or both, and a third for Elim if you can stretch to it.
Explore our cottages and apartments and check availability directly with Land's Edge to build a De Mond morning, or the full Damara Trail, into a few nights at the southern tip of Africa.
