Things to do in Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas
Land's Edge is in central Struisbaai, a short walk from the beach and harbour. Use this guide to plan easy outings close to home, day trips around Cape Agulhas and longer drives into the wider Overberg. Distances are approximate and measured from our three addresses, by road unless marked on foot. Opening times, fees and access can change, so please check the official link before you set out.

Close to Land's Edge: Struisbaai and L'Agulhas
Struisbaai Harbour (about 700 m to 1.6 km on foot)
Watch the colourful fishing boats come and go at Struisbaai's small working harbour. Resident short-tail stingrays are often seen near the slipway, although sightings are never guaranteed. It is free and an easy walk from Land's Edge. Please keep clear of the slipway and working boats, and do not feed or touch the rays.
Struisbaai beach
Struisbaai's long, wide white-sand beach stretches away from the harbour and is made for long, unhurried walks. Swim only when sea conditions are suitable.
The Southernmost Tip of Africa (about 6 to 7 km by road)
In Agulhas National Park, a cairn marks the southernmost point of the African continent. SANParks marks it as the official meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The new Agulhas Precinct beside the tip, handed over in April 2026, adds an interpretation centre and visitor facilities. SANParks publishes daily conservation fees for the park, so check the current fees before you visit.
Cape Agulhas Lighthouse and Museum (about 5 to 6 km by road)
Climb the 71 steps of the second-oldest working lighthouse in southern Africa and visit the lighthouse museum inside. The lighthouse reopened to visitors at the end of August 2025 after restoration following lightning damage. SANParks lists the lighthouse as open daily from 09:00 to 16:00, with the last climb at 16:00. It may close unexpectedly when the weather makes it unsafe. An entrance fee applies.
Meisho Maru shipwreck and the Rasperpunt Trail
West of the lighthouse, the rusting remains of the Meisho Maru 38 lie on the shore. The wreck is the start and finish of SANParks' Rasperpunt Hiking Trail, a 5.5 km circular walk past coastal fynbos, ancient fish traps and freshwater springs, before it climbs a ridge with views of the Rasperpunt rock formations. Numbered markers guide you along the route, and a self-guide booklet is sold at the park reception at 214 Main Road, L'Agulhas.
Suiderstrand (about 12 km)
Beyond the lighthouse, the small settlement of Suiderstrand is surrounded by Agulhas National Park. Explore its quiet beaches, rock pools, marine lagoon, pebbly bays and archaeological fish traps. It is reached by a gravel road. Rock pools are best explored at low tide, so check sea conditions first.
Cape Agulhas parkrun (Saturday mornings)
Join the free, timed 5 km parkrun on a Saturday morning. The flat out-and-back course follows the coast on grass, gravel and trail paths and turns near the lighthouse. It starts at the corner of Hangness Street and George Street, L'Agulhas. You can walk, jog or run; register with parkrun once before your first event and bring your barcode.
Whale watching from the shore (seasonal)
Southern right whales visit this coast in winter and spring. CapeNature gives June to November as the season at nearby De Hoop. Bring binoculars and scan the sea from the shore. Whales are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed.
Day trips around Cape Agulhas (30 to 85 km)
Shipwreck Museum, Bredasdorp (about 32 km)
Discover the stories of the ships wrecked along the Agulhas coast at this maritime museum in Bredasdorp, a good choice for a rainy day. It is open Monday to Friday 08:00–16:30, and on Saturdays and public holidays 09:00–14:00. It is closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve (near Bredasdorp)
This lesser-known reserve off the R319 Swellendam road protects what the Overberg Renosterveld Trust describes as the largest connected stretch of renosterveld left on Earth. Four trails start at the Research & Visitor Centre, from the 1.2 km Lookout Trail (about 40 minutes) to the 5.3 km Black Harrier Trail (about three hours). Self-guided walks cost R60 per person and guided hikes R250 per person (prices checked 24 October 2026). De Mond Nature Reserve (about 33 km)
At this CapeNature reserve at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, the 7 km circular Sterna Trail (about two hours) crosses a swaying suspension bridge and passes dune thicket and the beach before returning along the estuary. It is a good spot for birdwatching and riverside picnics (gas braais and Webers only; no open fires). Gates open 07:30–16:00 on weekdays and 07:30–17:00 on weekends and public holidays, and day visitors must leave by closing time. A CapeNature permit fee applies, and pets are not allowed.
Arniston: Waenhuiskrans Cave and Kassiesbaai (about 53 km)
Arniston, also called Waenhuiskrans, is known for its huge sea cave, which you can reach on foot across the rocks only around low tide. Check tide times and sea conditions before you go, and wear shoes with good grip. Turn back if waves are washing over the rocks, because low tide alone does not make the crossing safe. Nearby, the thatched, whitewashed cottages of Kassiesbaai make up a national-heritage fishing village that is still home to local families, so please explore respectfully.
Elim and the Agulhas Wine Triangle (about 55 to 60 km)
Elim was founded by Moravian missionaries in 1824 and is a declared National Heritage Site, with most of its buildings dating from the 19th century. Around it lie the vineyards of the Agulhas Wine Triangle, whose members describe them as the southernmost vineyards in Africa. Please plan a designated driver.
- Strandveld Vineyards, Die Damme Road, Elim: tasting room open Monday to Friday 09:00–16:00 and on Saturdays and public holidays 10:00–15:00; closed on Sundays. Payment is cash-free. Phone 028 482 1902 or email info@strandveld.co.za.
- Black Oystercatcher Wines: wine tastings Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–16:00 and platters 11:00–15:00, with veranda views over the Nuwejaars wetlands. Tutored tastings cost R100 per person and must be booked online (price checked 24 October 2026). Closed on 24 and 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027.
Napier (about 48 km)
Napier is a small creative village with makers' shops, galleries, a village market and a growing calendar of seasonal events. Napier Tourism publishes a visitor map and an events list.

De Hoop Nature Reserve (about 85 km; allow a full day)
CapeNature's De Hoop is a 34 000-hectare World Heritage Site next to one of the largest marine protected areas in Africa. Walk the coast from the dunes at Koppie Alleen and look out for bontebok, eland and Cape mountain zebra. From June to November, watch for southern right whales from the shore. At Potberg, the 6 km Klipspringer Trail (about two hours) passes the only remaining Cape vulture breeding colony in the Western Cape. A day-access fee applies. Check CapeNature's current day-visitor times before you travel. Sightings are never guaranteed.
- Guided activities in the reserve (De Hoop Collection): the guided vulture experience drives out to Potberg, followed by a hike of about an hour to a deck overlooking the Cape vulture colony (about three hours in all; ages 12 and over; 2–10 guests). Day visitors are welcome, but you must book in advance. Other guided activities include a two-hour interpretive marine walk along the rock pools (departs an hour before low tide), nature drives, eco boat trips on the vlei, guided mountain biking and birding walks. Ask when booking whether day visitors can join these.
Longer outings in the wider Overberg (90 km and more)
These are full-day drives rather than quick outings from Struisbaai.
Malgas pont (about 92 km)
Cross the Breede River at Malgas on the vehicle pont, which reopened on 23 July 2026 after flood repairs. The Overberg District Municipality lists its hours as 06:00–18:00 daily, weather and daylight permitting.
Drostdy Museum, Swellendam (about 103 km)
Visit the Drostdy Museum in historic Swellendam. It is open on weekdays 09:00–16:45, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10:00–15:00. 2 Drostdy Street, Swellendam.
Marine Big 5 boat trips from Kleinbaai (about 106 km)
Dyer Island Cruises (Marine Dynamics) runs boat trips from Kleinbaai near Gansbaai that look for whales, dolphins, seals, African penguins and sharks. The operator says southern right whales are part of its trips from June to December. Trips depend on the weather, and sightings are never guaranteed.
Stanford Saturday Morning Market (about 100 km)
Every Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00, a small, long-running farmers' market sets up on the stoep of the historic Stanford Hotel in Stanford village, with fresh bread and bakes, preserves, local produce, flowers and handmade gifts. Pair it with a stroll around the village.
Hermanus Cliff Path (about 123 km)
Walk all or part of the Hermanus Cliff Path, which runs along the coast from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach. Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Greyton Wine Weekend: 6–7 November 2026
Taste wines from about 30 producers around the village of Greyton on Friday 6 November (13:00–19:00) and Saturday 7 November (12:00–18:00). Tickets cost R640 per person (checked 24 October 2026) and include a tasting glass and a venue map. Greyton is about 140 km from Struisbaai.
Light Up Napier: 15–20 December 2026
Napier celebrates the festive season with six days of lights, markets, art, food and late shopping, and Christmas carols on 16 December.
NSRI Agulhas Santa Fun Run: Thursday 24 December 2026
Run or walk 5 km (R100, ages 5 and up) or 10 km (R150, ages 10 and up) on Struisbaai beach in aid of NSRI Station 30. The start is at 08:00 from the Nostra parking area, followed by a lucky draw at 09:30 and a visit from Santa at 10:00. Enter by 16:30 on 23 December; there are no entries on the day.
Creative Napier: 23–25 April 2027
Napier's artists open their studios over an art-filled weekend with exhibitions and guest artists.
Good to know before you go
- Fishing: you need a valid South African recreational fishing permit, which is sold at South African Post Office branches. Nature reserves such as De Mond have their own extra rules, and marine protected areas such as the one at De Hoop have further restrictions.
- Tides and the sea: coastal walks, rock pools and the Waenhuiskrans Cave all depend on the tide and swell. Check tide times and sea conditions before you go.
- Wildlife: whales, stingrays, birds and game are wild animals, and sightings are never guaranteed.
- Opening times and fees: we checked every listing on 24 October 2026, but details change. Please confirm with the venue before you travel.

Did you know?
- Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of the African continent, and SANParks marks it as the official meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
- The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was declared a National Monument in 1973.
- Local lore offers several stories about how Struisbaai got its name. One says it comes from the thatched roofs of the old fishermen's cottages, since "strooi" means straw in Afrikaans.
