How to catch a shark in Struisbaai – and other fables

If you want to catch a shark in Struisbaai, here's how to do it:

1. Head to the Langezand beach with all the necessary equipment, including a fishing rod, bait, and a bucket.   Try not to tell anyone of your plans, in case you don’t catch a shark. But take a friend.  Yes, that is important.

2. Look for signs of sharks in the water, such as fins or splashing.  Stand on the shoreline, don’t go in the water more than knee height. Sharks swim faster than you.

3. Once you've spotted a shark, cast your line and wait for the shark to take the bait. This might take a while, so be sure to pack a picnic hamper and good coffee.

4. When the shark is hooked, reel it in and use the bucket to transfer it from the water to the shore.  Easy peasy.

5. Once the shark is on the shore, take a selfie and release it back into the ocean.  It is happier under the sea, and will likely remember you saved its fin next time you go swimming.

And that's it! However, if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed by the task, you can always give up and have a meal at Catch Cook instead. After all, what can be better than watching the sunset with a fresh fish in the pan.
