Where to Stay in Struisbaai: A Guide to Self-Catering Accommodation
Struisbaai is a small fishing village 5 kilometres from Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. Most visitors come for the long white beach, the working harbour and the lighthouse, and most of the accommodation in town is self-catering: cottages, apartments and holiday houses rather than large hotels. If you're deciding where to stay in Struisbaai, this guide covers what matters most when you choose, and how our own cottages and apartments at Land's Edge fit those needs.
What to look for in Struisbaai accommodation
Struisbaai is compact, so the biggest difference between places to stay is how close they are to the beach and harbour. Staying within walking distance means you can leave the car parked for most of your trip: down to the sand for an early swim or a whale-watching morning, to the harbour when the boats come in, and back for lunch without a drive.
The second question is how you want to eat. Self-catering suits this town well. The harbour sells fresh linefish straight off the boats, and with your own kitchen you can buy it in the morning and cook it that evening. Look for a proper kitchenette, a braai and enough fridge space for a few days of shopping.
Finally, think about practicalities that matter on this coast: secure parking, hot water and cooking that keep working during load shedding, and a host who lives nearby and can sort out a problem quickly.
Is Struisbaai a good base for exploring Cape Agulhas?
Yes. Agulhas National Park and the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse are 5 kilometres away, Langezandt Fishermen's Village is 2 kilometres, and Bredasdorp is 31 kilometres. Arniston (38 kilometres) and De Hoop Nature Reserve (78 kilometres) are easy day trips. Struisbaai has more shops, restaurants and services than the smaller settlements nearby, which makes it a practical base for a longer stay.
Self-catering accommodation at Land's Edge
Land's Edge has eight self-catering units across three addresses in central Struisbaai, all within 700 metres of the beach and harbour and within walking distance of shops, restaurants and a doctor. Units sleep from two to six people, so there is something for couples, families and small groups. Every unit is named after a local fynbos species.
Cottages at 21 Cinneraria Street
King Protea and Wild Aster each sleep four in two bedrooms, which suits a family or two couples. Milkwood and Featherbush are one-bedroom cottages for two, a good fit for couples on a slower coastal break.
Apartments and a cottage at 5 Stompneus Street
Wild Olive (upstairs) and Fire Daisy (downstairs) are two-bedroom apartments that each sleep four. Flame Lily is a family cottage for four.
Suikerbos Huis at 11 Roman Crescent
Suikerbos Huis is a three-bedroom house and our largest unit, sleeping up to six. It's the one to book for a bigger family or a group travelling together.
What every unit includes
Each unit has a kitchenette with a microwave, kettle, stove-top and fridge, plus basic cookware, tableware and utensils. You also get a hairdryer, toiletries, an iron, a safe box and baggage storage, with braai facilities and a garden available. Parking is free, private and secure, and the property is covered by CCTV with 24-hour monitoring.
Water is heated by solar and the gas for cooking and hot showers is always on, so you can still cook and shower during load shedding. We harvest and purify our own rainwater, and you can drink it straight from the tap. The property is smoke-free and not pet friendly.
Can you walk to the beach from Land's Edge?
Yes. All our units are within 700 metres of Struisbaai beach and the harbour, an easy walk on flat ground. Most guests leave the car parked for the beach, the harbour and the restaurants in town, and only drive for day trips to Cape Agulhas and beyond.
Who looks after you
Land's Edge is run by an all-women team: owner Diana Kotze, guest manager Nadine Hensley and a housekeeping crew from Struisbaai. There is no front desk and no call centre. If something isn't right, you speak to the person who can fix it, and because the team lives locally, they can also tell you which boats are in, where the whales have been showing and which restaurant is worth booking that week.
